instead of the horrible amount of mail being pushed into your overflowing inbox in smu, cmu adopts a "pull" approach where you subscribe to a mailing list. i'm on the misc.market list which sends out notices to buy/sell furniture, appliances and also room rentals and sub-lets. i got this in my inbox today from a chinese phd student. i thought it was REALLy funny. His 2 other housemates are leaving him in march and he's looking for other people to fill in.

Cathedral of Learning

Ended the evening with a visit to the Cathedral of Learning at the U of Pitt. It was really nice and pretty. Harry-potterish perhaps? Long arching columns and students sprawled over large wooden tables buried behind their books, notes and PSPs.



It was a great building which I'm told was used as the backdrop of "Gotham City" in Batman Begins.

Carnegie Mellon, Day One

This is a good beginning.

You know its a special day when falling snow greets you from out of your window for the first time here. Counting Boxing Day in London 2005, this is my second time waking up and seeing nice fluffy snow swirling outside in the wind. Pretty. The cold in the air could not match the warmth from my heart. At least for today?

Today, is the day of days - my first day of school at Carnegie Mellon. On our way to class (i crashed Jamorn's MIS class) we met Silvant (?), our neighbour and exchange student from France and we sat through a pretty boring lecture on Information System Management.

My second class was definitely more exciting. The Rise of the Asian Economies where my classmates was a good mix of students from undergraduate and graduate levels, mostly from the Public Policy Program at Heinz. There was good diversity of backgrounds as well - from Japan, Singapore, Thailand, the US, India, Taiwan, Korea, Mexico, Thailand and even Kazakhstan. I thought Professor Lee was really good and provided great insight and perspective on the Asian Economic dream story. I think i'd like all this.

Oh did i mention the course pack is USD141? Ouch ouch. But the course seems awesome. It better!

it could not have been a better farewell. my last gift was the Singapore rain. It never looked or felt so beautiful. i wanna stand in the rain again. I'll be missing it for some time. bye-bye sg. hello America. take care everyone!

An old friend.

Finally met Sean after like .. 3, 4, 5 years? He was an extremely close friend in my lower secondary days while we shared many similar interest ... geeky stuff like starwars and computers. The drifting process started sometime in secondary 3 and it was a slow and decaying one that finally left us both unaware of each others lives.

It was great talking to an engineer (he works for the RSAF as an Aero Engineer) rather than the usual smootalk of banking, banking, banking and "fluff" talk. Also, how we basically summed up our lives in the absence of that few years was ... surreal. It helped me also sorta look back on what i've achieved and done.

Not bad i'd say. Been living a decent life so far.

If there was one wish for 2008, is that i'd stop being lazy and actually make an effort to keep in contact with those special people around me. =)

onion has not turned gay just as yet. please pardon the very girlish layout. I know i have meant to change my blog layout but this is NOT the new layout. Its been a terrible mistake cos i currently have 2 blog accounts. The other, for a school community project which i am raising funds for earthquake victims in Iran. (we're selling earrings) so then ... i made a mistake while updating the template.

i'll try to dig out a backup copy of my onionknight template ... which i feel ... no longer exist really. Sigh.

Thats right.

Every second passes and the date draws closer. School that is, is finally going to begin after like almost 3 years. It was only just 5mins ago that i realised that i have no idea how to factorise an equation. Is it that bad? At least i hope i would never have to have hair-tearing moments aka imaginary numbers back in jc.

re-studying gives this sorta strange familiarity and somehow, maybe by coincidence, I seem to understand it better. Maybe cos its familiar ground after all.

oh well.

August draws nearer and somehow I can already feel the strain of hitting the books (and endless projects) again.

Excited? yes. Frightened? very. A whole new world awaits.
